Price Your GMod Map: Factors, Models and Mistakes

Price your GMod map: which factors count, when selling to many or an exclusive license makes sense, and which pricing mistakes to avoid.

You set the price of a GMod map by bringing together your effort, the uniqueness of the map and what your audience is willing to pay, and then choosing a license model. A map that goes to many servers costs less per buyer than one that only a single server may use. There is no fixed market price, but there is a set of factors that gets you to a number you can justify.

Which factors determine the price

FactorEffect on the price
EffortMore hours and custom assets justify more, but the market has to pay for it
Size and scopeMore usable areas add value, empty space without content does not
UniquenessAn original setting or concept sets you apart from many similar maps
AudienceLarge communities with income pay differently than hobby servers
ExclusivityThe fewer servers may use the map, the higher the price per license
Support and updatesPromised maintenance is part of the product and may show in the price
ReputationKnown mappers with references can ask more than newcomers
Technical qualityGood performance and a clean delivery lower the buyer's risk

Effort is your starting point, not the result. Buyers pay for the benefit the map brings to their server. Two maps with the same build effort can be worth very different amounts if one fills a gap and the other is the tenth variant of a familiar layout.

Two basic models: many buyers or one buyer

Before you settle on a number, decide how often the map should be sold.

Selling to many suits maps for widespread game modes where many servers have similar needs. An exclusive license suits maps with a strong character of their own, where a server is looking for something nobody else has. In between there are variants such as a limited number of licenses or renting for a period. More on server-bound licenses is in the article Server-Exclusive maps.

One important point on exclusivity: only promise what you can keep. If a map has already been sold to others, it is no longer exclusive in the full sense, and the buyer has to know that beforehand.

How to approach a price

  1. Compare honestly. Look at what maps cost that are comparable to yours in scope, quality and game mode. The categories in the store are a good starting point. Do not compare with the best maps on the market if yours is not at that level yet.
  2. Estimate your effort. Note the hours for building, custom assets, testing and later maintenance. That tells you from which amount the project is worth it for you.
  3. Estimate the number of buyers realistically. How many servers are even candidates for this map? Few for a niche map, more for a widespread mode.
  4. Factor in fees and taxes. You do not keep one hundred percent of the sale price. Platform fees and your tax situation belong in the calculation.
  5. Choose the model and set the price. Decide on a clear number and justify it on the product page through the content, not through superlatives.
  6. Observe and adjust. If sales do not come, the price is not always the reason. Check screenshots and description first before you reduce it.

Typical mistakes

  • Too low out of insecurity. A very low price quickly looks like a sign of low quality and leaves you no room for promotions.
  • Confusing effort with value. Hundreds of hours on a map nobody needs do not add up to a high price.
  • Constant price jumps. If you discount often and heavily, you teach buyers to wait for the next sale. Discounts also have to be honest: a struck-through price that was never actually charged is misleading. In Germany, for example, untrue statements about a special price advantage can be an unfair commercial practice (§ 5 UWG, the German Act against Unfair Competition).
  • Not pricing in support. Questions and bug reports take time, even months after launch.
  • Giving away exclusivity too cheaply. With an exclusive license you give up all further sales. The price has to reflect that.
  • Overlooking rights. If the map contains third-party content without a suitable license, even the best price will not help.

Pricing models on bspmarket.de

On bspmarket.de you set the price yourself when you create the product. The regular purchase is a one-time price, and new approved versions become available to all buyers automatically. In addition, the platform provides for Server-Exclusive licenses for exactly one server: as a one-time license, also in an exclusive variant that is sold only once, or as a rental license with a monthly subscription. With the exclusive variant, earlier buyers keep their access. Which fees apply per sale and how to get started is on the Become a creator page. The article Sell GMod maps gives an overview of the whole path.

FAQ

What does a GMod map cost on average?

There is no meaningful average, because the range between simple maps and elaborate one-off pieces is too wide. Use maps that resemble yours in scope, quality and game mode as a guide, not a mean value.

Should I start with a low launch price?

That can make sense if you have no reviews yet and the offer is clearly limited in time. A price that is permanently too low is hard to raise later.

Can I change the price afterwards?

Yes, and that is normal. Raise it when the map has grown noticeably through updates, and lower it deliberately rather than in many small steps. Existing buyers should not be worse off because of a change.

Sell exclusively or to many?

If the map fits many servers, selling to many usually brings in more and spreads the risk. If it has a very distinct character and there is an interested buyer with a matching budget, an exclusive license can be the better choice.
