Sell GMod Maps: How to Get Started as a Mapper
Sell GMod maps: what makes a map ready for sale, what a good product page looks like and how price, protection and support fit together.
To sell GMod maps you need a technically clean map whose content you hold all the necessary rights to, a product page that honestly shows what the buyer gets, and the willingness to provide support and updates after the sale. Platform, price and protection build on that. This guide walks through the points in the order you will need them.
Is your map ready for sale?
Buyers are mostly server owners. They pay for a map that runs without rework. So check these points above all:
- Completeness. Every area is finished, reachable and lit. Placeholders and half-built rooms do not belong in a paid product.
- Performance. The map stays stable with many players and props and does not collapse in open areas.
- Cleanly packed content. Your custom textures, models and sounds are included in the BSP so nothing is missing on the buyer's side. Anything else the map requires, such as content from another game, is stated openly.
- Rights to all content. You only sell what you are allowed to sell. For third-party assets you need a license that covers commercial use. The basics are in GMod map copyright basics.
- Final technical check. Compile with your final settings, read the compile log and test the map on a real server rather than only in single player.
For the final check you can also run the finished BSP through the Map Scanner. It checks the structure of the file, looks for risky entities and lists the Lua and asset files embedded in the pakfile, things that are not immediately visible in game.
The product page: show what the buyer gets
A product page replaces a viewing. The more precise it is, the fewer questions and disappointed buyers you will have.
Screenshots. Show the map as it looks in game: with final lighting, from the player's perspective, across all important areas. A top-down overview helps people judge the size. Edited images that look better than the map come back to you in the reviews.
Video. A short walkthrough shows routes, proportions and atmosphere better than single images.
Description. Answer the questions a server owner has before buying:
- Which game mode is the map built for?
- How many players is it designed for?
- How large is the file?
- Which content is required?
- What is included, for example a navmesh or AI nodes?
- Which areas and special features are there?
Versions. Keep a changelog. Buyers can see that the map is maintained and know whether an update is worth it for them.
Price, protection and support
Price. The price depends on effort, uniqueness, audience and license model. The topic is big enough for its own article: Price your GMod map.
Protection. As soon as a map is sold, it can be passed on. That cannot be prevented completely. You can make it harder and traceable, though, for example with an individual mark per buyer or by binding the map to one server. Decide which protection you use before release, because a file that has already been distributed cannot be marked afterwards.
Support and updates. Plan time for this. Bug reports arrive in the first weeks after launch, and how quickly you respond shapes your reputation more than any screenshot. Say clearly what you support, such as bugs in the map, and what you do not, such as setting up third-party addons.
How selling works on bspmarket.de
bspmarket.de is a marketplace for GMod maps with integrated BSP Protection. The path to your first product looks like this:
- You sign in with Discord, link your Steam account, confirm your email address and apply as a Creator. An admin reviews the application.
- You create a product as a draft: title and description, then price and categories.
- You upload the purchase file. It is scanned for viruses.
- You add a thumbnail and screenshots.
- You set the BSP protection for the file: fingerprint only, Obfuscation with fingerprint, or deliberately without the platform's protection.
- You submit the product for review. Nothing is published until the team has reviewed it.
Every new version is also reviewed before publishing and then becomes available to all buyers automatically. Buyers can contact you from the product page after a purchase, and payment runs through Stripe. A platform fee applies per sale. Current terms and the way in are on the Become a creator page. Your tax obligations remain your own responsibility.
If you sell without a fingerprint, the platform cannot provide its own technical proof of origin if the file is passed on later. bspmarket.de does not guarantee complete copy protection in any case.
FAQ
Do I need a registered business to sell GMod maps?
That depends on your country, your age and the scale of your sales, and cannot be answered in general here. Clarify it with a tax adviser or the responsible authority before your first sale. Marketplaces generally do not take that responsibility off your hands.
Should I release my map for free first?
Free maps can make you known, but a map that has been distributed freely is hard to sell later. A clear separation often works better: a few free projects as a reference, and paid products kept apart from them.
What do I do if I find a bug after launch?
Fix it and release a new version with a short changelog entry. On bspmarket.de the version is reviewed and then becomes available to all buyers.
Do I have to protect my map in order to sell it?
No, that is your decision. Without marking, however, it is usually impossible to trace which copy a leak came from. What each measure achieves is covered in Protect a GMod map from leaks.
